New Delhi: In a shocking case of corporal punishment in Delhi, a second grader child was allegedly punished harshly by her teacher.
The death of the girl allegedly due to complications from the punishment gone overboard has since shocked the nation.
The 11-year-old girl student, Shanno Khan was allegedly made to stand in the sun for two hours on Wednesday for having failed to do her homework.
The teacher at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi run school in Bhavana area of the national capital has been booked for death due to negligence.
If convicted, she could go to jail for a maximum of 2 years but she hasn’t even been arrested yet because the police want to get the post mortem report first.
It is alleged that Shanno was beaten by her school teacher on Wednesday. The teacher Manju had reportedly banged the child’s head against a table before making her stand in the sun for over two hours.
The girl’s family blamed the teacher, the school principal and administration for the child’s death.
Shanno had been found unconscious by her younger sister who is studying in the same school. Her mother rushed her to the Hospital where the doctors tried to revive her from the comatose state.
DCP of the Outer District, Delhi Police Atul Katiyar said that the matter is being investigated and action will be taken.
Surprisingly, such incidents happen despite the Delhi High Court having ruled in December 2000 that provisions for corporal punishment in the Delhi School Education Act (1973) were inhumane and detrimental to the dignity of children.
But only seven states or territories have prohibited corporal punishment in schools.
Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Renuka Chaudhary said that while discipline was a necessity, corporal punishment and inhuman treatment to children are certainly not allowed.
Some questions being raised in the current case that are being raised though are as to why was there no FIR registered till the girl’s death.
The Police registered a case on Friday evening on the basis of the mother's statement. Why hasn't the teacher been arrested as yet.
While doctors say a grievous head injury could have triggered off the convulsions, only post mortem results could reflect if the cause was physical abuse.
The reports are expected on Saturday, after which the police would be able to determine if the teacher’s actions directly led to the girl's death.
