New Delhi: Violence was reported at a rally held in Maharashtra's Amravati district to protest the Dalit murders.
A police officer was injured in the attack and protesters are reported to have thrown stones at the police, burnt a police water tanker, a police jeep during the rally.
Police had to resort to baton-charge and lobbing teargas shells to disperse a group of protesters. Though the police now say that the situation is under control, the area remains tense.
The peace rally was held to protest the murder of four members of a Dalit family in Bhandara district in late September, where members of the Bhotmange family were killed by people of their own village after a dispute.
The father of the family escaped and the matter was brought to notice after several days of protests and violence, in and around Nagpur earlier this month, after which the state government has been under pressure to tackle the case.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil announced on Tuesday that the investigation into the Dalit murder case in Bhandara district of Maharashtra would be handed over to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).
Patil, who holds the Home portfolio, also announced that two policemen have been made co-accused in the case.
