Purnia (Bihar): It is said that all are equal in the eyes of God. But that is apparently not true about a temple in Purnia village in Bihar.
For ages, Dalits have been denied entry inside the temple but instead of sitting back, Dalits here decided to fight back.
As a result of the protest, the temple committee has been revamped and a Dalit youth is now heading it.
"Being Dalits, we were not allowed to enter the temple, “ said a local, Munni Kumari.
The issue of Dalit entry into the temple has divided the villagers into two camps but as the media descended, those accused of racial discrimination started shying away.
“This is a controversy against me,” said the priest, Dinesh Mishra.
The administration has initiated an independent enquiry into discrimination against Dalits before the divide further widens.
“This issue is a result of internal conflict within the temple committee members,” said SDO, Purnia, Rajesh Gupta.
Even as the Dalits wage a war against discrimination, only racial tolerance can solve the issue once and for all.
