New Delhi: Tension has erupted in Satara district of Maharashtra after police stopped a group of Dalits from burning themselves alive.
Police in Dare village stopped the attempt at self-immolation, just outside the District Magistrates office.
The Dalits came to the district collector, protesting against a wall which has been built separating the Dalit from the upper caste colony.
Talking about the incident and about the wall Bhim Nagar former Sarpanch Dinesh Kamble said, “The local MLA used Rs 3.75 lakh in funds to build this wall that has divided our communities. We are not even allowed to draw water from the well dug using Zila Parishad funds. We are taking this drastic step as the government has failed to take action.”
Built three years ago, villagers from Bhim Nagar allege the wall encroaches upon their part of the village and it blocks their access to a community hall, which was built for them.
The Dalits believe their cause is justified and they want the wall must go. This led them to threatened mass suicide before the police brought the situation under control.
However, no injuries have been reported but the situation continues to be tense. Police personnel and fire brigades have been rushed to the spot.
