New Delhi: The recent cases of student suicides - one in Gurgaon and the other in Bangalore - once again highlights the bitter question: Are we giving a suitable environment for our loved ones to grow?

Studies show that around twenty students take their lives in this country everyday, that every 10 minutes, someone in this country takes his own life.

In fact, psychiatrists say that there is often an underlying depression behind such cases, but a specific trigger could include a failed relationship, family pressures or studies, adding to the confusion of adolescence, when hormones are anyway hay-wire.

Many psychiatrists say disturbed teenagers have trouble dealing with relationship stress.

As the nation mourns the loss of Dana Sangma and the mysterious death of Richard Loitam and another Manipuri student in Bangalore, Jakio Heisnam, the focus has been brought on discrimination, and racial profiling.

It is important that care-givers from families to friends to teachers keep an eye out for alienation, signs of depression like disturbed sleep, loss of appetite, listlessness or even someone talking about taking their life. Please ensure they get trained help.
