Mumbai: The Supreme Court (SC) in a ruling on Wednesday refused to lift the stay on the renewal and the issue of a fresh license to dance bars in Mumbai.
The SC was upholding the orders of the Bombay High Court, which had earlier said that no dance bar licenses would be reviewed for eight weeks.
But the Bar Girls' Association is hopeful of a favourable judgment after the hearing on July 17.
"It is definitely a setback but it's a temporary phase - it is justice delayed but not denied. Ultimately the case will be in our favor. Any act, which is unconstitutional and has been declared void by the Bombay High Court will be upheld by the Supreme Court," says the Dance bars Association President, Manjit Singh Sethi.
The President of the Bar Girls' Association, Varsha Kale, is dissappointed but is not giving up.
"I am waitng for the hearing to finish soon and hoping the decision is in favour of bar dancers. We can tolerate the delay in judgement but the girls will not give up their fight for their livelihood," says she.
Following an appeal from the Maharashtra Government earlier last year, the Bombay High Court had banned dance performances in licensed eating houses.
