New Delhi: Former railway minister Lalu Prasad can be a demanding back-seat driver once he hops into a helicopter.

In August 2007, Lalu allegedly ordered his helicopter pilot to land on a highway in Bihar. In April 2009, he was arrested and released after his chopper landed near an election rally in Jharkhand. But in 2009, Lalu has vowed to be a cautious air traveler.

The death of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash on Wednesday has made Lalu cautious. The Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Bihar Chief Minister ensured that all security measures and checks had been done on his helicopter before he took off from Patna on Saturday. He told the pilot that he would follow his instructions.

“We (politicians) always tend to ignore safety warnings, thinking the pilot is making excuses. In such cases the pilot should refuse to fly the plane,” Lalu later told reporters.

Reddy his special secretary, chief security officer and two pilots were killed when the chopper carrying them to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh crashed in bad weather.
