Darjeeling still tense over bandh call

Kolkata: Wednesday is the second consecutive day of the indefinite bandh called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in Darjeeling and the city is still tense.

Three trains carrying tourists from the hill station arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday morning. Already nearly 10,000 tourists have been forced to leave following the Morcha’s call an indefinite bandh.

But many tourists are still stranded in Darjeeling with reports coming in that bandh supporters are forcefully restricting the movement of transport. The bandh supporters have forcibly closed all hotels and restaurants.

The Morcha's bandh call is for a separate state of Gorkhaland.

There are also reports that several trains are stuck in the foothills of Darjeeling.

Meanwhile six companies of the Central Reserve Police Force arrived in Siliguri and four companies will be deployed in Darjeeling to control the situation there.

"The rates of all food items have increased. The government should understand the situation and come up with a proper solution," Utpal Mullick, a stranded tourist, said.
