Click to play videoMumbai: Day four of the on going Prithvi theatre festival saw the play Antigone starring Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak Shah. After performing the play over 30 times, audiences don't seem to be bored of seeing their favourite pair on stage again.
“Antigone is a play which has several versions existent.
It was originally a play written in the Greek time, really hundreds of years ago and then it was re-interpreted and done as an adaptation that' is post World War II. It reflects the kind of issues that were of interest to the times, the kind of issues that would raise discussions about the individual and the state etc,” says actor Ratna Pathak Shah.
Antigone which has been performed over 30 times but still has viewers coming back for more.
“They are no longer Naseer and Ratna, they are sheer magic of the powers of actors and especially the way Dubey ji has adapted these characters and given his own Dubeyisms in it you can relate to them so easily,” says a theatre actor, Raj Banerjee.
“Antigone for me as a play is very difficult to pull off, because the protagonist is suppose to be a much younger girl and Ratna has played it really very skillfully and very sensitively and for someone of that age to come back 20 odd years and to be playing that role with such finesse I think its really very good,” adds another theator actor, Nimrat Kaur.
“It’s the first time I've seen Naseer and Ratna Pathak Shah on stage and its really an experience to watch it because they have such stage presence their awareness about themselves, modulation of their voice, they are technical and how they work is really fascinating,” says theatre lover Siddharth.
