Rescue operation on Bandra-Worli Sea Link

Mumbai: In a dramatic rescue operation in the sea early on Wednesday morning, the coastguard saved nine people including four policemen from a fishing launch called 'Mauli' in the high seas.

The police team were on duty for the VVIP security in view of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) inauguration since Tuesday. On their way back after the night vigil, their boat got entangled in fishing nets and boat stopped. A distress call from the crew at around 6:30 am alerted the coastguard which immediately sent out it's rescue choppers.

The operation was launched at 7:30 am and the first sortie with the chetak helicopter reached the boat at 7:50 am. It rescued three men considering the precarious situation of the boat. In the operation which continued till 10 am all the four policemen and five local 'kolis ' were rescued.

This drama on high seas strangely coincided with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link's public opening. Reports also suggest the boat was drifting close to the bridge when the rescue teams reached it. But the policemen who were saved just in time heaved a sigh of relief.

The trapped boat now lies abandoned at sea, while the policemen will resume duty after a routine inquiry about the incident.
