New Delhi: Such is the magic of Harry Potter that it’s appeal transcends age barriers.

From the humble beginning in 1997 Harry Potter today speaks 65 languages with 325 million copies sold worldwide making it one of the fastest and best selling series.

Statistics aside, what is the spell that J K Rowling has cast to captivate millions of readers?

“The books are very detailed so they give so they give you a beautiful and a detailed imagery of yet another world,” says psychologist, Madhumita Puri.

A potent mix of suspense, thrill and fantasy and you know you have your best-seller ready. And when its a best-seller, the role of marketing cant be overlooked.

Says literary critic, Nilanjana Roy,” The first book was doing very well on its own. It was a word of mouth success initially.”

Magic, wit and the author's eye for detail also contribute to the success of Harry Potter.

The graphic descriptions make you at once a part of Hogwarts or a cheering fan watching an exciting match of Quidditch.

Just like the muggle-world everything magical has a name and a brand making it virtually real.

And so you know that the Firebolt is the best broom to fly and Hog's Head is the best bar in town.

“One can read The Wizard Of Oz and Pullman’s series end number of times. You can go back to those books after brief intervals and still keep picking up on details in layers. Rowling is not a layered writer, she is a sprawling writer,” says Roy.

A coming-age story, a modern-day cult classic, a best-seller with the right dose of teen-love, masala and magic is what you may call the Harry Potter series.

You may like it or dislike it but you definitely can’t ignore it. And that’s what makes the magic of Harry Potter as complex to decode.
