Dehradun cops accused of killing MBA grad

New Delhi: Police in Dehradun are under fire after shooting and killing a management near the city on Friday night.

The family of Ranbir Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad city in Uttar Pradesh, alleges the police killed him in a fake encounter. Singh was visiting Dehradun to join a new job and was travelling with his two friends on a motorcycle when the police stopped him in a place called Dalanwala in the town.

Police allege the three men argued with a constable who asked them to stop and then fled after snatching his service revolver.

Police shot dead Singh at another checkpoint near a forest but his two friends escaped. Police claim they opened fired after being shot at. Anil Sihna, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Dehradun, claimed a pistol and knife was found in Singh’s bag.

Singh’s family rejected the police’s allegations and alleged he had been killed in cold blood. Singh’s father Ravinder alleged his son had no criminal record and the police killed him to win medals. Ravinder claimed the police had threatened him and wanted him not to complain.

Sunil Verma, who claims he saw the shooting, alleged police dragged and hit with Singh a rife before killing him. Police say they are searching for the two men who were with Singh.

N A Ganpati, Inspector General of Police, told CNN-IBN a magisterial probe of Singh's death has been ordered. President Pratibha Patil was in Dehradun on Friday.
