Delhi: 5 cases of domestic abuse in 24 hours, 3 women dead

New Delhi: Highlighting the rise in crime against women in the national capital, five cases of dowry related violence were reported in a span pf 24 hours on Sunday.

Three women were found dead in the capital over the past 24 hours in three separate cases of suspected dowry harassment and two others are battling for their lives.

In the first instance a 27-year-old woman plunged to death in Vivek Vihar. Her in-laws claim she committed suicide but her own family says she was pushed.

"They no longer wanted to keep her with them. They wanted to throw her out. She wanted to run away with her kids," Victim's relative said.

In another incident in Dwaraka, an MCD school teacher was found hanging at her home. Police suspect she committed suicide, but her family alleges foul play.

In MS Park, police have arrested the husband of a 28-year-old woman who was found dead. Her family too alleges she was being harassed for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh.

This victim from Najafgarh is battling for her life with 90 per cent burns. She was allegedly set on fire by her husband for not paying dowry.

"They used to torture her on a regular basis. They demanded money from her and taunted her that she didn't bring enough for them. She's been married only for 9 months," Victim's sister said.

In another incident, a victim in Jaitpur was rescued from forced confinement at her in-laws' home. Her family alleges she was mercilessly locked up and starved for two months after she fell sick.

"When she went to her husband's house she was fine. Her husband and her mother-in-law tortured her for the past two years. When she fell ill, they refused to have her treated. When the washing machine broke down they refused to have it repaired and asked her to get the money from her parents," victim's mother said.

These shocking incidents have once again highlighted the rising crimes against women, and put a question mark over the effectiveness of anti-dowry laws.
