New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Sunday detained another suspect in the Defence Colony bank robbery case and recovered Rs 80 lakh from him. The suspect's name is Harish. The total amount of cash recovered is now Rs 2.3 crore. The police had on Saturday arrested one and detained four others in connection with the case. The police recovered Rs 1.5 crore from them.
The arrests came after the police recovered two empty cash trunks from Khirki village. Police sources said that the heist seemed to have been masterminded by a gang active in Faridabad region.
Armed men on Friday looted Rs 5.25 crore from a van carrying cash for Defence Colony's ATMs and fled after shooting a guard. Four to five men in a Hyundai Verna car intercepted the Maruti Eeco van that was carrying the cash in the upscale Defence Colony at around 1:00 pm. They then dragged out four men from the vehicle at gunpoint and shot at one of the two security guards present in the van after he resisted them. The injured guard Munni Singh, who was rushed to AIIMS, died later.
The cash had been taken from ICICI Bank's Hauz Khaz branch in south Delhi by Premier Shield Pvt Ltd, an agency engaged by various banks to replenish ATMs, and was being brought to Lajpat Nagar area, a few kilometres away when it was waylaid. The gunmen then fled in the cash van. It has also been found that the car in which the robbers came was stolen. They left the car at the spot.
