New Delhi: Delhi residents will have to carry a photo identity card with them from January 15 onwards. The police say the measure is intended towards creating foolproof security in the face of rising incidence of terror.
The document must have the person's photo - such as an electoral I-card, driving licence and ration card. And preferably should be a government-issued one but other ID cards like school, college and office ID cards too could be acceptable.
Delhi Police plans to bring out advertisements on January 10 and are finalizing the list of acceptable documents. But there are questions being raised over how practical this is going to be.
But the question remains what would the police do with a person from outside Delhi who cannot show them any identity card?
And Kiran Bedi, former DG, Bureau of Police Research and Development welcomed the move.
She said, “This move should be welcomed. It's in the interest of the people who create nuisance.”
"The decision to verify the identity of citizens has been taken to step up security in the wake of recent terror attacks in various parts of the country. The checking would help prevent such incidents," Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna said on Friday.
An order has been issued in this regard to the Delhi police, he added.
The checking would be carried out randomly and any individual can be asked to produce identity proof which could be photo identity card, ration card, passport or any other valid proof, Khanna said, adding that adequate publicity would be made about it in the city which has a population of about 1.6 crore.
