New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday angered Opposition parties when she spoke about migration from “Bihar, UP and other states” to Delhi.
"Delhi is seen as a prosperous city. People from Bihar, UP and other places come here. What can we do? We can't stop them. There is no law to stop them," she said at a function to inaugurate three flyovers. According to rough estimates approximately five lakh people settle in Delhi each year.
Dikshit later said her statement had been distorted and politicised. "I had no intention of hurting the feelings of people coming from other states to settle in Delhi in search of their livelihood," she told reporters.
"I myself am from UP. The question of slighting anybody does not arise," PTI quoted her as saying.
Delhi BJP chief Harshvardhan wanted Dikshit to apologise to the people of Bihar and UP. "About 40 lakh people from Bihar and UP are permanently residing in Delhi. These people are the lifeline of Delhi. In such a situation, the statement by Sheila Dikshit in which she has termed the people from Bihar and UP as outsiders is reflective of her fascist thinking," Harshvardhan said.
"The Chief Minister and her son (East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit) should resign on moral grounds for the statement made against the Poorvanchal community," said Congress MLA Mahabal Mishra, who is from Bihar.
Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said she would comment after finding out what Dikshit had said.
The youth wing of UP’s ruling Samajwadi Party today burnt Dikshit’s effigy in Allahabad. In Varanasi, Rashtriya Janata Dal workers burnt her effigy.
The Congress lost the civic elections in Delhi to the BJP in April and since then Dikshit has been battling pressure to resign from her post.
