Delhi: The monkey menace in Delhi is assuming disastrous proportions. While the nation celebrated Vijaydashami, the capital's Deputy Mayor succumbed to injuries sustained after he was attacked by monkeys.
Deputy Mayor S S Bajwa was attacked by monkeys on Saturday, while he was standing in the balcony of his residence. While grappling with the simian attackers, Bajwa toppled over and fell off the balcony. He died of his injuries on Sunday.
Chief Minister Sheila Dixit said that it was a very unfortunate incident. "Delhi has lost an able leader," she added.
Bajwa's death has once more highlighted the man-monkey conflict in Delhi.
Throughout the capital, stray monkeys have spared no one with children being particularly easy targets.
Though the Municipal Corporation of Delhi hired monkey catchers to rid the city of the menace, they maintain that they need help from the government.
The Mayor of Delhi, Aarti Mehra, affirmed this. "We need more help from the central government and the wildlife department," she said.
While the buck has clearly been passed by the MCD onto the state government, the Chief Minister feels that this is neither the time, nor the place to politicise the issue.
And as the blame game continues, Bajwa's death has left his family inconsolable on Dusshehra.
As Bajwa's neighbour, Vinay, remarked, "He lost his life to monkeys."
