New Delhi: Three accused in the gangrape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old girl inside a private bus in Delhi on Sunday have confessed to their crime in a Delhi court on Wednesday. The accused Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh, the brother of main accused Ram Singh, were produced in the Saket court on Wednesday where their admitted to their role in the heinous crime, which has left the girl battling for her life in Safdarjung Hospital.
Pawan Gupta told the court that he cannot identify himself because he had committed a horrible crime while Vinay while confessing to his involvement claimed that he had only beaten up the girl's male friend, but had not done anything to the girl. The third accused Mukesh agreed to identify himself even though his brother who is allegedly the leader of the group had on Tuesday denied that he was involved in the crime and had refused to undergo an identification parade.
While Mukesh has agreed to a test identification parade, Pawan and Vinay have refused to do so. Mukesh will undergo the identification test on Thursday at Tihar jail, the court said. The court remanded Pawan and Vinay to four-day police custody while Mukesh was sent to Tihar jail for 14 days in judicial custody.
Ram Singh had already been sent to five days in police custody by the court on Tuesday. Ram Singh is the driver of the bus inside which the crime took place while Mukesh is the cleaner, Vinay Sharma is an assistant gym instructor and Pawan Gupta is a fruit seller.
Meanwhile, a team of Delhi Police has detained Akshay Thakur, who is also accused in the gangrape case, in Bihar's Aurangabad district. The accused had absconded to his native place after committing the crime along with five others, four of whom have already been arrested. One of the accused is still on the run and police teams are trying to trace him.
The 23-year-old victim continues to fight for her life. Doctors treating her say some of her vital organs have been permenantly damaged and she's suffering from a blood infection. She has been on ventilator support now for over 60 hours now. A medical bulletin is expected on Wednesday evening.
The girl and her male friend had boarded the bus on Sunday night after watching a movie. Once they were inside the bus, they found that there were four people apart from the driver and the cleaner. Soon the accused started to harass the girl and she was brutally beaten up along with her friend by iron rods when the duo protested. The girl was then raped by the six men inside the bus.
The victims were then stripped, their mobile phones snatched and thrown off the bus. Some passers-by found them and called the police.
