New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday said that the Delhi bus gangrape case should be tried in fast-track court. "We demand that the case be tried in 30 days and the guilty be hanged," she said.
She further said that Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi should promise action in the case as it is her government which is in power. "Why is Sonia demanding action? She should be the one promising action in the case. Isn't this her government?" asked Sushma.
The issue rocked Parliament on Tuesday with the BJP demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and women MPs of the party threatening to stage a dharna in the capital on Wednesday.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Sushma demanded death panelty for rapists. "The 23-year-old girl was with a male friend and it was not too late either. It was 9.30 pm. And if a woman is not safe even then, then it is a shame. If this girl survives, she will be a living dead. These people should be given capital punishment," she said.
Speaker Meira Kumar also exhorted the government on Tuesday to take strict measures over the issue without delay. "This is a serious issue. This is a heinous act. I will allow you to raise the matter during Zero Hour," she said. In the Rajya Sabha, an emotional Jaya Bachchan said that she had been left totally shaken and speechless by the crime. "Our culture and belief that women are goddesses...all have been laid waste today. What is happening in the country and the capital is shocking."
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Meira reiterated her demand for stricter laws to deal with rape cases. "In a society that claims to worship women, such incidents are condemnable. They raise questions on the kind of society we are. We need a stricter law to deal with such incidents," she said.
National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma said that rapists should be made to suffer for committing such heinous crimes. "Rapists must not be hanged, they should be given a life sentence and made to suffer everyday. Even though it's a non-bailable offence, bail is given all the time. This must stop immediately," she said.
The victim, a paramedical student from Dehradun, was gangraped, brutally beaten, stripped and thrown out of a private chartered bus near Mahipalpur flyover along with her male friend - who managed to file a police complaint at around 1.15 am - on Monday night.
