New Delhi: In a dubious distinction, Delhi recorded two gangrapes in two days. After the alleged rape of a 24-year-old by policemen in the Inderpuri Police Station in West Delhi, another woman was allegedly gangraped by three men on Tuesday night.
The accused were reportedly known to the victim and took advantage of the fact that she was alone at her home.
Meanwhile, the police continue to be under scrutiny for its slow investigation into the Inderpuri rape case. In fact, the police registered an FIR almost 24 hours after the victim alleged rape.
“We couldn’t track the woman all day. As soon as she came to us we recorded the statement and filed an FIR. It is mere media speculation that we were slow,” Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal said.
At first the police took its own time to record the statement of the accused and file an FIR and then several hours later the police hasn’t been able to even identify the accused, leave alone arresting them.
“The victim has said that the SHO and four other policemen raped her but she hasn’t named anyone. So we are still trying to identify them,” Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said.
The police even claim that victim's statements are inconsistent and that prima facie there doesn’t seem to be any evidence against the accused. They even quoted a previous Supreme Court judgement. Bhagat said, “The Supreme Court has said that if we don’t have concrete evidence against the accused in a rape case then we don’t have to arrest them”.
But if actor Shiney Ahuja was arrested immediately for allegedly raping his maid and that too even before a medical examination of the victim, then why is the police dragging its feet in this case. Is it simply because men in uniform are involved?
