New Delhi: A probe has been ordered into police lapses responsible for the gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi on December 16. A probe has also been ordered into the Sub Divisional Magistrate's complaint of police interference while recording the rape survivor's statement, following Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's complaint to Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
Justice Usha Mehra, a former Delhi High Court judge, will probe police the lapses in the case. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had written to Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to order a high level inquiry into reports that top policemen interfered in the recording of the 23-year-old gangrape survivor's statement.
The Sub Divisional Magistrate trying to record the statement of the survivor said the police officials' briefing did not match the survivor's statement, citing pressure from the police.
These are serious allegations at a time when both the government and the Delhi Police are dealing with credibility crisis after the brutal gangrape case. If proven, these will lead to violation of rules under the Indian Penal Code, which says that there can be no interference by other policemen while recording the statement.
Delhi Police came out with a strong denial and also demanded a high-level probe into the "leakage" of Dikshit's letter to Home Minister. "We deny the allegations levelled by SDM Usha Chaturvedi. "Delhi Police demands a high-level inquiry into the leakage of a top-secret letter written by the Chief Minister to media," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
The 23-year-old rape survivor gave her statement to the SDM on Saturday. Her health remains a big concern. Doctors say she remains in a critical condition in Safdarjung Hospital. On Monday night, her condition took a turn for the worse as doctors indicated she had more internal bleeding. But on the positive side, doctors say she is responding to treatment.
Earlier on Monday, doctors had said that she was conscious and communicating. They also said that her Platelet count has going down from 19000 to 17000.
