Delhi gangrape-murder: 5 accused plead not guilty to charges

New Delhi: Forty five days after the gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student aboard a moving bus in the national capital, the wheels of justice have finally started moving. A fast track court in Delhi on Saturday tightened the noose around the five adult accused, charging them with murder, gangrape, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy under 13 stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused have pleaded not guilty.

The important sections under which the five accused will be charged are:

Section 302: For murder which carries the maximum sentence of death;

Section 376 (2(g)): For gangrape which has a maximum sentence of life;

Section 377: For Unnatural sex with a maximum sentence of life;

Section 396: For dacoity leading to murder which has a maximum sentence of death.

For the braveheart's family, this brings some hope. Upset with the Juvenile Justice Board's decision to try the sixth accused separately as a minor, the family can now hope that the trial will be a speedy one.

The trial in this case will now begin from Tuesday. More than 80 witnesses will testify in this court. This is a mammoth exercise and in spite of being on the fast track court, we will have to wait and watch whether the conviction takes place within next month or not.
