New Delhi: After much hue and cry created over a spate of accidents involving Blueline buses in the capital, the Delhi government has decided to keep the killer buses off Delhi roads for two days.
The Delhi government has directed private bus operators not to ply buses on Saturday and Sunday—choosing comparatively lean days—making sure that the decision does not affect commuters the way it did last week, when the buses were taken off the roads.
The government has asked asked Bluelines bus operatoes to get speed governors installed on each one of these vehicles within those two days. The operators will also have to get fitness certificates ensuring pollution check.
From Monday, only buses that meet these criteria will run. The decision follows public outcry over the increasing number of accidents involving blueline buses. On Thursday, one more person was killed after being hit by an over-speeding bus.
So far more than 60 people have died in blueline accidents this year in the capital.
Blueline buses came on to the roads about two decades ago because state-owned DTC was making losses while demand for public transport was growing. Blueline is a loose brand for a service that no-one really owns! Bluelines were introduced under a contract system that involved no service guarantees for commuters. It has only come to mean lack of safety on Delhi roads.
