Delhi: Half dozen cases of sexual assault recorded across the city

New Delhi: The national capital, rocked by a sensational rape-torture death of a 23-year-old in December 2012, witnessed five more rapes and a sodomy in the past 48 hours, Delhi Police said on Thursday.

Among the incidents was the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl by her neighbour and four of his friends. The neighbour has been arrested and a hunt is on for the others. The girl was attacked by Monu, 24, and his four friends in west Delhi's Aman Vihar area on Tuesday afternoon.

In another incident, a seven-year-old boy was sodomised by his 16-year-old neighbour on Wednesday evening at a secluded place in west Delhi's Nihar Vihar area when he had gone to buy some medicines.

Delhi is frequently being described as the crime capital of India, and even Sheila Dikshit has expressed serious concern over the rising crimes.

The accused was taken in police custody and sent to juvenile justice home.

Among the victims was also a five-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her tutor on Wednesday afternoon in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar. The accused, Himanshu was arrested after the girl told her parents about the incident.

In another incident, an 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 23-year-old neighbour inside her house in east Delhi's Khajuri Khas area when she was alone at her home. The accused Sudama was arrested.

In Delhi University South Campus area near Dhaula Kuan on Wednesday, a 42-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 69-year-old retired lieutenant colonel, Ashok Kumar, whom the woman knew since 2007. Kumar was arrested Thursday, said a police officer.

In the sixth case, a 15-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl on pretext of marrying her in Delhi's Kanjhawla area. The boy eloped with the girl a week ago and raped her.

"A case of rape was registered on Wednesday after the boy was arrested from his hideout here in the city. The girl has been handed over to her family members," said a police officer.

Delhi is frequently being described as the crime capital of India, and even Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has expressed serious concern over the rising graph of crimes against women in the city.
