New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has approved a proposal by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to depute special magistrates to deal with complaints about misuse of water.
The DJB says that the per capita water consumption of Delhi is more than that of Germany. And to meet this demand the Delhi Jal Board has decided to come down heavily on the misuse of water.
One could be fined Rs 10,000 for washing one's car or watering one's lawn in Delhi.
"Our field officers will be going to every house and checking. And then a date would be given to those who are found misusing water for hearing in the court of special magistrates. Following that challans would be issued to them," said Director Revenue, DJB, SB Shashank.
As per water management rules, water supplied for domestic use cannot be used for bathing animals or washing vehicles, gardening, trade or manufacturing business, fountains, swimming pools, or construction work.
The decision to crackdown on misuse has met with mixed reactions from residents of Delhi.
"They are trying to regulate the use of water which is a good thing, that is if they are able to implement it," said a Delhiite.
"We treat plants like our children what will happen to them. They'll wither away without water," another resident complained.
However, water management experts say this proposal is a positive one but would be difficult to implement.
"In case they are thinking on these lines they should make arrangements for alternate sources or people are going to continue using it for every purpose," said water management expert, Salauddin Saiphy.
The DJB will levy a fine on a daily basis till the offender stops violating. The fine ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 10,000 Rs.
With measures in place to preserve drinking water the Delhi government seems to be in no mood to compromise this time.
