New Delhi: On September 13, 2008 serial blasts rock three busy market areas in Delhi. The market associations and police officials then decided it was time to increase the security.
“After blast we had meetings with police officials and we decided that all our CCTV cameras should be monitored all 24 hour,” says GK Market Association President Rajendra Sharda.
Sixteen new CCTV cameras were installed in Gaffar market but now three months later most of them don’t work.
The market has 14 loudspeakers but no announcements are heard. There are six metal detectors, which have only been put up at main entry points leaving other entries and exits completely unmanned but it was the M block market in GK1 that gave the real shock.
The doors of the monitoring room are also shut and no police officials can be seen on duty.
When CNN-IBN correspondent asked the guard about the timing of the police officers, he said that there is no specific time.
“Kabhi do baaje tak aatein khabhi shaam ko (Sometimes they come at 1400 hrs IST and sometimes in the evening,” says the guard.
Even on the road there were no police officials. Only six unarmed private security guards were seen there. Despite of the two terror attacks in the last three months, the markets in the capital are still as vulnerable as before.
