New Delhi: The MCD has ordered an enquiry and a detailed report into the building collapse which took place near Jama Masjid on Tuesday night. Investigative officials are to submit their findings in three days and action will be taken against the guilty on the basis of this report.

The incident left eight dead and close to 20 injured.

An eyewitness said, "I heard a loud noise. I rushed outside and I saw the building collapse within a few seconds."

"My heart goes out to all the victims. Their relatives must be going through a lot," said Syed ahmed Bukhari, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid.

Rescue teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority and National Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot. They pulled out at least 25 people from under the concrete rubble and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Some were declared dead on arrival.

A NDRF official said, "We have got sophisticated material with us which can detect if there is a live person underneath. But, we are unable to deploy because of the ground. There is hardly any space to stand over there."

Locals heckled Union Minister Kapil Sibal when he reached the hospital to visit the injured. They alleged that major construction work in an adjacent building triggered the collapse.

"The buildings here are of substandard quality and have been constructed in a haphazard manner," said an eyewitness.

A house collapsed in Lalita Park last November which killed more than 65 people. Tuesday's tragedy was a gruesome reminder of that incident and may now force officials to take a call on many dilapidated buildings in the old city area
