New Delhi: Two days of excessive rainfall that brought Delhi to a standstill has exposed the Delhi local authorities' claims of being ready for the monsoon. Friday's morning rain again brought many parts of the capital to a standstill with waterlogged roads, flooded localities, traffic jams.
Thursday evening saw Delhi receive the highest rainfall in the last 50 years. The city's show piece international airport bore the brunt
The downpour poured water on the Delhi government's claims of being well prepared to handle waterlogging this year.
The MCD claimed to have covered most of the drains. 625 portable water pumps were deployed to drain out water. 13 new super sucker machines were also brought to clean drains. The ground reality is starkly different, but the Chief Minister's reply was not.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, "This is an unusual rain. We have to be patient. The MCD, NDMC and other agencies are doing their best to tackle the situation."
The Met department has predicted heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, with chances of thunderstorm in different parts of the city.
Jams, waterlogging is the story year after year, monsoon after monsoon. The MCD claims to have additional water pumps and a 24-hour team just to handle waterlogging, but when it pours nothing works in New Delhi.
