New Delhi: Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore account for almost 34 percent of all crimes in 35 major cities country, says a new police report

Delhi occupies the top slot among 35 ‘mega’ cities with the largest number of crimes—a notoriety it has earned for five years in a row.

Crime in India: 2006, the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), says Delhi has the most murders, rapes, dowry deaths, kidnappings and molestation cases.

The national capital remains unsafe for women: the city recorded 31.2 percent of all rape cases reported in major cities and also had a high number of dowry death (120) and molestation caes (629).

State-wise Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of crimes (1,94,711), followed by Maharashtra (1,91,788), Andhra Pradesh (1,73,909), Tamil Nadu (1,48,972) and Rajasthan (1,41,992) during 2006.

Madhya Pradesh earned another dishonour: it reported the highest number of rapes (2,900) in the country.

Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of violent crimes accounting for 12.1 percent of total violent crimes in the country (24,851 out of 2,05,656) followed by Bihar with 11.8 per cent (24,271 out of 2,05,6556).

UP also reported 16.9 percent (5,480 out of 32,481) of total murders in the country and 18.4 percent (4,997 out of 27,230) total attempt to murder cases.

The number of crimes against women has increased in the last five years: from 7.4 percent in 2002 to 8.2 percent during 2006.

The report reveals a new trend: young people in the country are taking to crime. As many as 44.6 percent of all criminals arrested in the 35 major cities in 2006 were between 18 and 30: a sharp rise from 2005 when the figure was 44 percent.

A bit of good news in the report is that though the total number of cimes in India increased by 1.5 percent in 2006, the crime rate (number of crimes per one lakh population) declined by 0.02 percent.
