Delhi suburbs worst affected by dengue fever

New Delhi: The residents of Aditya Mega City building in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad are worried. Dengue has already hit 12 people in this society alone and 28-year-old Meenu Singh is the latest victim.

Last week, Meenu suddenly developed headache and fever. A blood test confirmed her worst fear, that she had contracted dengue fever.

Construction work is going on in most buildings in Indirapuram. The area is waterlogged with little or no provisions for any drainage. Scores of mosquitoes including the dengue causing aides mosquito silently breed in those stagnant waters.

"Water is stagnating all around us due to the ongoing construction work. Mosquitoes are breeding all around. Many women and children have fallen ill here," says she.

There is water logging right next to a park that the residents and children frequent in the evening. Also surprisingly, even though construction work is still going on, some 80 families have already started living in the building and 50 more are expected during Diwali.

Basements are in no better condition and residents are suffering.

Internal Medicine doctor at Fortis, Dr Ajay Rastogi says, "We are getting maximum patients from Indirapuram, especially the building where construction work is still ongoing. It has already reported eight confirmed cases, and this could just turn worse."

The cold response from authorities is only adding to the misery of the residents. When the residents recently complained to the Chief Medical Officer, they were in for a rude shock.

"The CMO actually told us that he can't go into every house and clean it up. We didn't expect this from an official," says Meenu.

What's worse, the residents are paying Rs 150 per sqaure foot for maintenance every month.

Some however, are still managing to see humour in the bleakness. "They said we'll be getting a swimming pool. Maybe this is what they meant," says a resident.
