Delhi to get a new cricket stadium

New Delhi: Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla has seen some of the greatest moments of Indian cricket.

The most famous being Anil Kumble's 10 wicket haul in an innings versus Pakistan in 1999.

Another moment that will always be remembered by the cricket fans is Sachin Tendulkar raising his bat as he completed his 35th Test ton to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's world record of 34 Test centuries.

The entire Feroz Shah Kotla stood up and gave the champion batsman a standing ovation. But there are doubts now if the Kotla will host anymore international matches.

However, the competition is from Delhi itself as the Board of Control for Cricket in India is planning to construct a new stadium in the national capital.

"Close to about 38 acres of the land has been made available to the BCCI and we are looking at building a world class facility in Delhi. It will have ample of parking space and will be one of the best stadiums ever built," BCCI's vice-president Lalit Modi says.

BCCI wants to host the final of the 2011 World Cup at the proposed stadium.

But the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) isn't too happy as it has spent a lot of money in renovating the Kotla and upgrading it.

"I have played for Delhi and I have also played Test matches at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground. Kotla has history and culture. So cricket should be played here. That is my opinion," former Indian opener Chetan Chauhan says.

However, the BCCI says that there will be no clash of interest and that Delhi can have two stadiums.

"With the amount of product that we are going to put out in the market place and the no of games, whether it is 2020 tournament, Ranji Trophy or the ODI tournaments. I think for a capital like Delhi it is important to have two stadiums," Modi says.

Cricket stadiums in India are not owned by the BCCI as they are the properties of state associations which lease their stadiums to the BCCI for conducting international matches.

The cash coffers of the BCCI are overflowing at the moment and spending some of it on stadiums seems like a good move.
