New Delhi: The Delhi government sought and got time till November 15 to come up with a plan - a plan to phase out the private Blueline buses that have killed close to a 100 people this year alone.
96 deaths in 2007, 36 since July 2007, nine buses booked for over speeding and 25 drivers booked for drunken driving - it may sound unbelievable to a city battling with a death every three days because of reckless driving of Blueline bus drivers, but that’s exactly what the Delhi government told the High Court.
Only nine buses were found to be over speeding during the whole of 2007 and when the court expressed disbelief over the figure, they added that 826 were also prosecuted for not having speed governors, which was violating the Supreme Court guideline.
High Court lawyer Anup Bhambani says, “Over speeding may not be the cause of death always but still the figures given appear unbelievable to me."
The government promised to be ready with a phase out plan by November 15 and with the ownership details by November 25.
But CNN-IBN has learnt that over 500 bus owners are untraceable and this includes the owner of the bus, which killed seven people on Sunday.
The High Court has now asked the government to investigate the subletting racket and find a solution to the menace at the earliest.
Even in the past, the High Court has said that the government seems least interested in solving the Blueline mess and by stalling proceedings; the government seems to be adding credence to the view.
Now as the focus shifts to November 15, one can only hope and pray that the gory stats of a death every three days is not enhanced till then.
