New Delhi: The traffic police in Delhi are resorting to technology to come up with a ‘failproof’ tracking system to cut down traffic violence.
The Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) is a virtual hub where10 Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras and 26 static cameras are installed in the city roll 24X7 as police keep a close watch on you.
PTZ cameras installed at 10 points in Delhi can pan tilt and zoom with just a click of a finger.
Images are transferred through high bandwidth optical fibre-based network to the control room where the police can detect and prosecute traffic violations.
But the best part is that this technology wizardry has an auto pilot mode too.
“This system records round the clock and we can detect and prosecute violations by retrieving the archived footage,” says head of Traffic Monitoring System, Praveen Kumar.
Another breed of high-tech cameras is the red speed, installed at nine points in Delhi. The red speed pins down all those speed demons that blast past the green signal clocking more than 50 km per hour and the impatient ones who jump red lights.
Says Assistant Commissioner, Traffic, Delhi, G S Awana, “The still camera is activated when an offence is committed. Sensors embedded in the road trigger the camera which clicks three different pictures and packs all the information along with the date place venue and time of violation.”
And apart from that there are Personal data assistants (PDAs) known as simputers to issue challans at the speed of light.
The simputers come kitted with a compact printer that prints the challans on the spot. The simputers can also retrieve past violation by a vehicle or a driver too.
And last but not the least is the interceptor equipped with laser based speed gun, laptop and a camera to record lane violations. The technology tool keeps a tab on your speed.
So clearly traffic police is tapping technology to cut down on crime.
