Delhi: Troops rush to Sikh pockets

New Delhi: Kamaljit Singh, a resident of Sangrur, was returning from Talwandi Sabo where thousands of Sikhs had gathered to protest the alleged sacrilege of the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, when a clash broke out with supporters of the Dera Sacha Sauda.

Singh was shot dead - the first casualty in the violence between the two groups.

The five Sikh high priests who met at the Talwandi Sabo Gurudwara near Bhatinda have given the Punjab government time till Sunday to act against the Dera.

"We'll make any sacrifice to abide by the decision taken. There’s no question of pardoning Dera people," said SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar.

Nearly 5,000 Sikhs, who were heading towards the Dera's office in Salabatpura near Bathinda, were stopped by police to avert more potential clashes.

More than 20,000 Akali supporters had gathered at Salabatpura and Dera activists had to barricade the entrances to the compound.

“We want peace but the police are not doing their job because there is political pressure on them,” said Dera supporter Gurbachan Singh.

The Centre has rushed paramilitary forces to Punjab, Sirsa in Haryana where the Dera Sacha Sauda has its headquarters and pockets of New Delhi with a significant Sikh population.

The Haryana police have sealed its border at Dabwali to stop Dera supporters from marching towards Punjab.
