Delhi: A 70-year-old woman was attacked in broad daylight at her posh Greater Kailash (GK) - 1 residence on Wednesday afternoon. Rising crimes against senior citizens raise serious concerns of whether the Capital is a safe place for this vulnerable section of society.
Crime against senior citizens have been constantly rising in the Capital. Satvant (70) Kaur lives with her son Harvinder singh. On Wednesday afternoon, Satvant was brutally assaulted by three-four men at her GK -1 residence. Her attackers ransacked her home and left with a laptop, jewellery and other valuables.
"Unhe sar pe mara tha aur bandha hua tha, wo aise padi thi jaise mar gayi ho (she was hit on the head and was tied up, it appeared as if she is dead) ," said a neighbour, Ved Prakash Aggarwal.
In the last five years, as many as 85 senior citizens have been murdered.
- In 2008, the Capital saw 15 murders involving senior citizens
- The PCR registered over a hundred distress calls from the elderly/li>
- There have been nearly 600 complaints filed of robbery and harassment
"It is becoming scary to live in this neighbourhood. Children are not safe, elderly are not safe. One feels like one should leave the country and go away for this very reason," said a resident of GK - 1, Anita Lamba.
This is certainly not the first case of a senior citizen being attacked in the National Capital, but what is most important now is to know what the law enforcement agencies are doing to make sure that this remains the last such case.
