New Delhi: It might be a shocker to those who are fighting the cold, but last December 2008 was actually the warmest in the capital over half a century.

In a recent report, the Indian Met Department has stated that December 2008 has been the warmest since 1953 and second warmest in the recorded history of capital since 1901.

“Due to the western disturbances changing direction, the winds started blowing from south as a result December was warm” says Director, Met Department, B P Yadav.

The mean minimum temperature last month was 10.2 degrees against the normal of 8.2 and the mean maximum temperature 24.5 degrees 1.5 degrees above normal.

And while the average mean temp for last month was 17.4, it was slightly higher at 18 degrees in Dec 1953.

Many missed the Delhi winter but there were some who rejoiced in the sun. While shopkeepers were disappointed that winters saw reduction in purchase of wollen clothing, hardcore Delhiites also missed the chill winters.

“I like Delhi winter, I am disappointed,” says a Delhi resident.

“If winters are warm, then summers will be warmer,” says another resident.

And this may sound like global warming. The met Gurus aren't too sure.

Everything can't be attributed to global warming. It cannot affect only one month, It has to be unidirectional” says Director, Met department, BP Yadav.

The New Year has ushered in the proper winter for the capital and the met predicts several cold spells in the days ahead.
