Delhi worst hit by power crisis

New Delhi: The Capital is facing unprecedented power crisis with most areas combating seven to eight hours of power cuts every day.

The Power ministry has now stepped in to tide over the crisis. High officials from the Power Ministry, National Thermal Power Corporation and the Power Grid assured Delhi government on Saturday that measures would soon be taken to solve the crisis.

" We are planning to bring gas based power to Delhi to the tune of nearly 500 MW from Kawas Gujarat, in next 3-4 days," Chief Secretary R Narayanaswamy said.

However, the claims appear unrealistic, given the rising demand for power that touched 3,568mw on Friday, with a massive shortfall of over 700 mw.

While Delhi’s power crisis is something that is played out year-after-year, the question most Delhiites are asking is, if privatisation of power has made any difference to the existing situation.

Perhaps, better planning would have helped, officials admit.

"Delhi's demand for power had been projected in the month of July to be about 3700 mw. The demand has risen above 3,900 MW till now. In the month of April, May and June when we had still bigger crisis, we postponed maintenance of a number of power stations," R V Shahi, Secretary Power says.

Wile the Centre has promised an added 1500 mw of power to states in northern India within next one week, an action plan would be ready by this August.
