New Delhi: On Tuesday night, a speeding Baleno reportedly hit a truck killing six of the seven people travelling in the car on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The police say that the reason for the crash was most probably the killer cocktail of alcohol and speed.
DCP (Traffic) Gurgaon, Satinder Singh Gupta says, "At night when people see there is not too much traffic, they tend to overspeed. People also take time to get used to these new flyways. Abroad too many such cases are reported in the initial months of flyways opening."
Only four days ago, a 19-year-old was killed after his bike smashed into a truck on the expressway. In another incident a month-and-a-half ago, three teenagers died when their car crashed into a divider on the same expressway. All these add up to 20 deaths since the roads opened for use in January this year.
People say that most common causes of accidents are that people drink and drive and that there is not enough patrolling on the streets. Also, they say that the expressway is badly lit.
Police offcials agree, saying that poor visibility could be hampering the driver's judgment, but that's a charge denied by the company managing the expressway. The management passes the buck straight back to the police.
DS Constructions' Senior Manager Administration, H K Singh says, "This place is completely lit for almost 42 kms. Maybe more patrolling would help."
Traffic police officials say no matter what they do to prevent accidents, nine out of ten times it's the error on the part of driver's judgement that leads to these incidents. So, driving responsibly might be out best bet for a smoother and safer ride on these expressways.
