Delhi's high-speed bus corridor in slow lane

New Delhi: Thursday was when Delhi's controversial high-speed bus corridor would have been put to the test. But now it seems that this 5.6-km stretch in south Delhi is far from ready. Workers are still painting the lanes meant for the rapid transit of buses.

Pavements resemble lunar landscape and for a road which is complicated, there are neither signs to guide vehicles into their respective lanes nor instructions for pedestrians to cross.

Even traffic signals specific to different road users are still being put up. Clearly, it's a lot more than just finishing touches that the BRT corridor needs for even a short trial run.

Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf admits the delay but assures quick completion of all work."All work will be completed and we should have a test run by tomorrow,” he says.

Though DIMTS, the agency responsible for the BRT corridor, refuses to confirm if a trial run will actually take place on Friday, sources within the agency have indicated its possibility.

Meanwhile, the pressure to meet the deadline is weighing heavily on their shoulders.

Apart from this target, DIMTS has another task at hand, educating the road user on how to use this complex system.
