New Delhi: It's business as usual at the crack of dawn at the Ambedkar Bus Terminus in New Delhi. The Delhi-Lahore bus, Sada-e-Sarhad, is making its last trip for the week, but this time the number of passengers have fallen to 27 from its full capacity of 42.

The popular Delhi-Lahore bus came to represent the bettering of ties between India and Pakistan nine years ago, but today there is an overriding feeling of fear within those who took the bus.

“We are scared. Safety is a serious concern. We are worried if our relatives will reach safely or not,” Farzan said.

Saood Ahmed, accompanied by his mother, is going to Lahore for the first time. He too acknowledges the threat perception, but refuses to let his spirits go down.

“I am scared but everything is in Allah’s hands. I hope the journey is peaceful,” Saood said.

Saood’s co-passenger Tabassum too had a heart wrenching story to tell. She was bidding farewell to a sister she met after almost 40 years. Now the next meeting looks tough with tension between the two countries escalating and so she has decided to head back home to Pakistan.

“It was no fun visiting India this time because I have to leave. There is talk of war. I wonder what is going to happen,” Tabassum said.

As relatives from this side of the border bid farewell to those travelling to Pakistan, they hope the dark clouds over Indo-Pak ties lifts and they get to see their loved ones soon.
