Tarkundi (Poonch): Samim Bir lives barely 50 metres away from the border fence at the Line of Control (LoC).
His village, Tarkundi, has only two houses and six voters. Despite that, a polling station has been set up for the families at the LoC to allow them to exercise their right to vote.
"For six people we have a polling station. This is called democracy," says Tarkundi sarpanch Lal Hussain.
But the numbers haven’t always been this low. In 2001, over thirty families from the village crossed over to Pakistan when terrorism picked up in the area.
"Thirty families left this village, but we didn't. We want to stay in India because we are Indian," Salim Bir, a resident of Tarkundi Village, says.
Polling arrangements for these six voters are the same as elsewhere. Fifteen people, including 11 security men, have been deployed there to conduct the polling.
"As per the directions, there has to be a polling station at a distance of every 2 km, and this village falls into the category," Returning Officer, Mendhar Constituency, T K Bhatt says.
