New Delhi: The capital is suffering from a serious dengue outbreak and it will get worse in the coming days. The number of dengue cases is much higher than official figures and are set to peak in October around the Commonwealth Games.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is the latest to blame construction at Commonwealth Games sites in addition to the rains.

"The combination of heavy rains that has lashed the city this year and the debris created due to the ongoing construction for the upcoming Games is proving to be an ideal one to give rise to diseases," says Azad.

The Commonwealth Games construction site in Delhi's Vasant Kunj area are meant to house guests coming in for the Games. But the area has turned into a dengue breeding ground. There is a lot of waterlogging in the area and the MCD health inspectors have now confirmed a dengue outbreak.

"At least 90 workers are down with fever out of which 70 are suffering from dengue," says a construction worker at the site.

While the MCD confirms only 452 cases and one death in Delhi, local estimates in South Delhi's Jamia Nagar alone go upto 10 times more.

Delhi's major hospitals together report more than 1,000 confirmed cases and about 200 suspected cases. Private labs like Dr Lal Path Labs told CNN-IBN that they have confirmed more than 1,000 dengue cases in Delhi in the past month.

It is a similar story at Dr Dang Labs in South Delhi.

"We get 50-60 suspected cases every day out of which 15-20 are confirmed dengue cases. In my experience this is the worst dengue outbreak in the last 15 yrs," says Dr Navin Dang

South Delhi's Jamia Nagar and Okhla remain among the worst hit spots along with Vasant Kunj and Central Delhi. These places are also the hubs for Commonwealth construction sites.
