New Delhi: The dengue situation in Delhi continues to be grim. Eleven people have died of the disease and over 512 cases are being treated across hospitals in the Capital.

This includes the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, which has over 16 employees and doctors amongst patients. The municipal authorities claim all measures are being taken to contain the outbreak.

"We need awareness and not panic. We have things under control. The Government of Delhi has done well. The NDMC and the MCD are in coordination working well and manpower is being augmented," Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said on Tuesday.

However looking at the ground reality, the situation seems far from being under control. Drains, stagnant water in sewage dumps in several areas provide an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Even the city's poshest areas are now facing a major mosquito menace.

"The MCD people came here but they didn't spray any insecticides. They threatened to fine me but when I said that the stagnating water wasn't from my house. They left without spraying any medicine," Delhi Resident Rajender Sethia said.

Its not just open drains and puddles, but air-coolers have also been found to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. While the municipal authorities claim to be doing full-fledged efforts to curb mosquito menace, residents complain of negligence.
