Bhubaneswar: A shocking story from Balasore in Orissa - a woman has been chained by her husband for the past one year, reason - she lost her mental balance after being continuously refused compensation for her land.

Chained to miseries for the last one year after repeated attempts to fight for her rights failed. All that 52-year-old Ramamani Behera of Karanjiabindha village in Balasore district was fighting for was compensation for this on acre land, her family's only source of livelihood.

In 2003 an oil company initiated a project to lay oil pipes from Haldia in West Bengal to Paradeep in Orissa.

Ramamani was one such farmer whose land was used in laying the pipes. But after the pipes were laid, the land turned infertile due to constant water logging.

Ramamani could no longer cultivate the land. Her family alleges they were not compensated.

Ramamani says, "I went everywhere for the compensation, to the companies office, to the administration office to even police station. No one listened to me and drove me away."

Frustrated Ramamani lost mental balance and become violent. Even after treatment at a government hospital yielded no result, her husband was forced to chain her.

Ramamani’s husband, Sanatan Behera says, "She became very violent. In order to stop her from harming anyone, I was forced to chain her. All these problems are for the land we lost."

When CNN-IBN brought this matter to the notice of the district collector, he promised immediate help.

Reacting to the incident, Balasore collector Alekh Chandra Padihari says, "I was not aware of her problem. Now I will enquire in the matter and will extend all possible help she needs to get her rights and for her treatment."

Those words will surely sooth Ramamani's family since most other people affected by the project in the area have been compensated.
