Dera chief cremation today, Punjab on alert

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Punjab has been on high alert since Wednesday night since the body of the Dera Sachakhand chief Ramanand was brought to Jalandhar where the cremation is scheduled for Thursday.

The chartered flight which brought the body of Sant Ramanand made a brief stopover at New Delhi airport, where several political leaders gathered to pay their respects to the religious leader killed in clashes in Vienna a fortnight ago.

The cremation will take place with full state honours at Ballan near Jalandhar on Thursday afternoon and thousands of followers of the Dera, from various parts of Punjab and other states, are expected to attend.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place and additional security forces are on the standby.

Sant Ramanand was killed in a shooting incident in Vienna triggering large scale violence in Punjab recently.

“We due respect we pay our tributes to Guru Ramanand. We also pray for the fast recovery of injured guru Niranjan Das,” said MP Kumari Selja.

Dera Sacha Khand Ballan chief Niranjan Dass, injured in the incident, also returned by the same flight.

“Government of India and Punjab Government officials wanted to talk to the injured guru Niranjan Das but his health did not allowed it,” said Akali Dal leader, Manjit Singh Rathi.
