Dera row: Angry Sikhs clash with police in Punjab

New Delhi: Angry Sikhs clashed with the police at Ferozepur in Punjab over the Dera issue on Sunday.

The incident occurred when hundreds of Nihangs, Sikhs who follow a militant ideology, ransacked the meeting place of the Dera Sacha Sauda.

Police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesting Sikhs.

The violence comes just days ahead of mass meetings called by both the Dera and Sikhs at Sirsa on July 11.

Meanwhile, the body of Jaswinder Singh, the Dera follower who died after immolating himself, was brought to Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in Sirsa at the behest of his family members.

Singh, who set himself afire on Monday, battled for his life for five days in a Delhi hospital before succumbing to burns on Saturday.

His mortal remains were brought to Sirsa accompanied by a large group of about 1,000 Dera followers.

The body was then taken to his native village Chak Attar Singh Wala for cremation.
