New Delhi: A 24-year-old woman committed suicide because of alleged dowry harassment.

Aastha Jain was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom and her suicide note blamed her in-laws and husband Amit Jain for the death.

Amit Jain and Aastha Jain were married for just under a year. Amit is absconding.

Police say that the girl's family had given a Mercedez Benz in dowry last year on the eve of the wedding, but her in-laws had been demanding Rs 80 lakh ever since.

The Mercedes Benz which was given to Amit by Aastha's family at the time of the wedding.

Aastha's father Ashok Jain reached the spot and 'gheraoed' the house along with dozens of his supporters, seeking arrest of the in-laws, whom he accused of harassing her for dowry ever since the wedding.

Even as a dowry case has been registered against the in-laws and they have been arrested, her husband is still absconding.

Aastha's family gheraoed her in-laws home and called the police.

Ashok Jain even stated that his daughter had been murdered and then hung from the ceiling fan to make it seem as if she had committed suicide.

Jain, who has a paper business in Chawri Bazaar, said his daughter's mother-in-law Asha (58) and sister-in-law were the chief culprits.

Married to Amit (27) on April 29, 2007, Astha in her suicide note said she was taking the extreme step as she was being regularly harassed for dowry.

An SDM inquiry has been ordered and Ashok Jain's statement taken.
