Despite ban plastic bags galore across Delhi

New Delhi: How seriously does Delhi government take its own orders? On 7th January 2009- Delhi government ordered a complete ban on the use, sale and storage of all kinds of plastic bags.

But CNN-IBN finds its polybags galore across the city- At the Delhi Emporium in Chief Minister Shiela Dixits constituency; polybags are still being handed out.

So here's my shopping and it's been given to me in these plastic bags. This is a clear violation of the ban imposed by Delhi govt.

At Urban Development Minister Rajkumar Chauhan's constituency, in the plastic wholesale market, it is business as usual. Incidentally the minister himself is the President of a PVC market -

“He is involved in the plastic business himself (minister), so there won’t be any ban here,” says a shopkeeper.

CNN-IBN produced the proof in front of the Chief Minister, who reacted by ordering action.

“Thank you for telling me about this. We will fine them now, we certainly will because Delhi Emporium or any Govt organization, sometimes they have the impression that we need not follow the law because there will be someone looking after us,” says Shiela Dixit. CM then quickly made a phone call to give orders for the ban.

It remains to be seen how effective the ban actually will be in the rest of the city, especially in big malls and retail chains.
