London: Increasingly expensive and frustrating delaying in trying to have a baby through surrogacy in UK have prompted the Bains from London to come to India. Now, the Bains are a proud parents of Daisy, a 10-month-old daughter, was born through a surrogate mother in Mumbai. The couple from East London, had spent 13 years trying for a baby in the UK.
Daisy's parents Nikki and Bobby Bains said, “Well our dreams have come true, what we wanted. I wake up to see if she’s still there. She is purely for us…its possible.
Despite the ethical debate over paying women to carry babies, surrogacy in India is thriving. Clinics in Mumbai and Gujarat are quite popular with overseas couples. Surrogate mothers can get between Rs 1 to Rs 3 lakh for would-be parents, that's half the cost they would pay abroad.
There is a high success rate, since multiple embryos can be planted in India. However, it's not all smooth sailing.
Nikki and Bobby Bains said, “We laugh about it now but since we were foreigners, we should have got more information, more communication, things are different, offices etc. If we go for another baby, things will be different.”
India has been criticised for lack of regulation and laws on surrogacy. But, after the case of the Japanese baby Manji last year, the Indian government has proposed the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill, expected to be passed later this year. This will make surrogacy agreements legally enforceable, protecting all the parties involved.
While the cost remains the main factor, there is a genuine shortage of Asian donors in the UK, which also drives many like the Bains to go to India.
