SC verdict: IIM aspirants still in a fix

Mumbai: Three days ago, all the six Indian Institutes of Management delayed their admission process after the HRD Ministry under Arjun Singh instructed them to wait for the Supreme Court word on its OBC quota plea.

On Monday, that landmark hearing came and went, but the admission confusion still persists. Thousands of IIM aspirants are none the wiser despite the apex court staying all quota proceedings for another academic year.

“Earlier it was only the question of whether I get in or not. Now there is uncertainty regarding when I will come to know about it,” says and IIM aspirant Viraj.

Viraj’s sentiments are echoed by close to 5,000 other students shorlisted by the six IIMs who feel the confusion over quota is “both frustrating and financially constraining.”

On their part, IIMs are choosing to play safe. They say the admission lists are ready for release but they are waiting for fresh instructions form the Ministry.

“We will wait for HRD ministry to take back its earlier directive to hold admissions and then we will go ahead,” says Director of IIM-A, Bakul Dholakia.

So while the quota chaos looks to continue for some time to come, there’s also some good news for the management aspirants.

Students who have applied to non-IIM B-schools will lose only Rs 1,000 if they make it to the IIM list now, and no institute will be allowed to keep original certificates submitted by applicants.
